Diagnosis: Stage 4 Colon Cancer

Years of Survivorship: 2 years

I love being outside. I have always enjoyed the refreshment of running. It’s very refreshing mentally. When I run, it’s like a mental reset. The problems aren’t solved and the issues are still there, but my mind feels clear.

How has running or staying physically active affected your cancer journey?

“I have followed Gabe's story for years, even before my own diagnosis. I was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in January 2021. I have been running as much as possible through nearly 2 years of chemotherapy, surgeries, and dealing with this disease. There have been many ups and downs and huge life changes, however running is one thing that has remained a constant, even though it's changed.

I was a Division III runner at Bethel University for cross country and track and after graduating, I’ve competed in distance races from the 5K to the marathon. Although my times slowed through the years, my love of the sport and the outdoors remains. During my cancer journey, running has motivated me to move even when I am not feeling great. It has kept me strong which helps minimize symptoms a bit. It has provided me with a glimpse of my previous life, if only for a bit of time. I am thankful for the Brave like Gabe organization and its support of cancer research. My cancer is not ‘rare’ but is still cancer with all that entails.”

What advice do you have for people on staying fit throughout their cancer treatment or recovery?

“Take advantage of the days you feel good and get a good workout on those days. On other days, even a light walk or bike ride can give you energy. Set a reasonable goal for yourself to try to reach.”

What is one of your proudest accomplishments since being diagnosed with cancer?

“I am proud to be able to complete 3-4 mile runs even during hard chemotherapy cycles.”

How has Gabe's story impacted you or changed the way you view life as a cancer patient/survivor?

“Gabe’s story touched me even before my diagnosis, but once I found out I had cancer, it has inspired me. It also breaks my heart in that I wish there had been more options for her treatment.”

“Well I am fighting for my life and for my family. I am trying to set an example of not giving up, of grace through suffering, and faith for the future.”

What are you most looking forward to in the near future?

“I am looking forward to being as healthy as possible to enjoy my family and fighting my cancer however I can. Beyond that, I am hopeful for more treatment options for colon cancer patients.”
