Introducing the 1224 Campaign

The purpose of this year's inaugural Brave Like Gabe 5K is to benefit the Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Foundation (ACCRF), with the objective of funding a research grant and raising awareness for rare cancers. There is currently no cure or an FDA-approved treatment for patients with ACC. Our goal is to raise $50,000 to fund a much-needed research grant through 1224 total race sign-ups, in-person and virtual!

Why 1224?

On average, there are 1224 new Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) diagnoses in the US every year. In 2009, Gabe was one of the 1224. In 2015, Brave Like Gabe 5k co-planner, Lisa Bakri, was impacted by an ACC diagnosis through her husband, Ziad. But now Gabe and Lisa are two of the 1224 who will participate in the year's race in support of all ACC patients. By filling the race with this specific number of spots, each participant in the Brave Like Gabe 5K is running (or walking!) in support of a newly diagnosed patient just starting the journey of navigating life with a rare cancer. Depending on your perspective, 1224 is either a fairly big or small number. We hope to show how powerful a group of 1224 can be through this race and its contribution to research!

1,224+ / 1,224

Brave Like Gabe believes that all cancer survivors and patients are brave. Although they may not feel particularly brave, look brave, or identify as brave, rare cancer fighters don't have a choicethey have to be brave.

And with you on our team of 1224, we can all be Brave Like Gabe and help make a difference in the lives of these patients and their loved ones.

The live Brave Like Gabe 5K is taking place in St. Paul, MN on May 20, but for those who want to join the cause and participate from afar, you can be part of the action through our Virtual 5K. Once signed-up, your race kit will be mailed to you in May and you will receive instructions for how to run from anywhere in the world! (Walkers are also welcome.)

Update: we reached our goal of filling 1224 spots, thank you! But we do have "bonus" spots available to help us boost the research grant we are funding for those able to join for the run in St. Paul! There are many more than 1224 ACC survivors waiting for a treatment, so we welcome additional runners this Sunday to run for research.
